Sweet Action: NFL Week 2

Kevin, the host of the D.C. Sports Guys, will start the NFL season with $100 of his own money. The objective is simple: make as much as possible betting on NFL games. No funds can be added during the season. He will either lose it all or be smoking a victory cigar on February 7, 2010.

DAMN CINCINNATI! One tipped ball into the hands of Brandon Stokley and I go from ending week 1 up $34 to losing $5. Not the worst thing that could have happened, but really how lucky was that play? My safety net bets, #1 and #2, saved me last week and have kept me alive to bet another week.

Both Kansas City and Oakland performed well in week 1 against teams picked to go far in the playoffs. The Chiefs stayed close in a shootout against Baltimore while Oakland's defensive was solid against San Diego. This game could go either way which is indicative of the default three point spread. Kansas City also hasn't announced their starting QB yet listing Matt Cassel as a game time decision.
Tennessee is coming off a tough overtime loss to Pittsburgh in a game that showed their defense hasn't lost a step with the loss of Albert Haynesworth. The Texans on the other hand couldn't get any thing to go right in their opener against the Jets. The Jet's rookie quarterback, Mark Sanchez, threw for 272 yards and a TD and looked comfortable picking apart the Texans secondary. The Titans are an all around better team than Jets, are at home, and are hungry for their first victory. The Texans and their injury prone QB, Matt Schaub won't stand a chance.

The Jets played a perfect game down in Houston to open up their season. New coach Rex Ryan has this team finally playing up to their potential. Mark Sanchez will have a tougher time against the Patriots secondary but he has a capable backfield in Thomas Jones and Leon Washington. The Jets defense is no slouch either, expect the two pro-bowlers Revis vs. Moss match-up to be exciting and force Brady to work the ball to Joey Galloway and Wes Welker more than he did against Buffalo. The Patriots are coming off an opening game they should have lost. If McKelvin takes a knee Buffalo is 1-0. The Patriots are losing more and more players from their 3 championships and are a full year removed from their 16-0 season. Teams are starting to figure out blitz packages that work against New England and no one is scared of them this year. I expect a close game and even think the Jets have a good chance of winning out right, but I'll play this safe and use the Jets in a teaser to get a +10 or +13 point spread.
If not for a fluke play in the final minute of the game Cincinnati would be 1-0 coming into Green Bay. Rey Maualuga appears to be the real deal after just one week of play and was a bright spot on the Bengals defense in their opening loss to Denver. Cincinnati's defense will once again keep them in the game this week against Green Bay. Aaron Rodgers and Green Bay are the better team, but I don't see them pulling away by more than 9 points against another hard hitting defense in week 2. This game also fits into a good teaser situation getting the Bengals anywhere from +15½ to +18½.

When you come off an 0-16 season the last thing you need is to open your first game against one of the best offensive teams in the league and your second against one of the best defensive teams in the league. Detroit falls 0-2.
With Kevin Kolb slated to start at QB and missing two-time Pro Bowl offensive lineman Shawn Andrews the Eagles are going to have a tough time moving the ball on Sunday. Not even the Eagles defense, who play great in Carolina, will be able to keep them close enough to win. Drew Brees and the Saints get a gift from the NFL by not having to play at Philadelphia in the months of November or December. Instead they will arrive to sunny 75 degree conditions, perfect for the Saints to throw the ball all over the field.

This game will prove if Jake Delhomme still has what it take to be a QB in the NFL. His past two games have been terrible, but Delhomme has proven to be a good QB in the past and if he can get off the schnide Carolina has a chance to be competitive in this game. I'm mark it as 'Stay Away' only because I don't know which Carolina offense will appear this week. If they play anything like last week however, the Falcons will win by double the spread.
I will not bet on the Redskins.

I will not bet on the Redskins.

With that said... they can't lose to the Rams... right? If I were to bet with this game I'd use the money line to sweeten the deal on a 2-4 team parlay.

Jacksonville is coming off a good defensive showing against the Colts. But that defense only went 2-6 at home in 2008. The Cardinals looked sluggish in their opener against the 49ers, but everyone knows what that offensive is capable of. If the Jaguars play like they did in week one this game will be close, too close. With big question mark surrounding Jacksonville's offense and a hurt Anquan Boldin I'll keep my money away from this contest.
Seattle is healthy and back as being the team to beat in the NFC West. The 49ers are a tough team and much improved under Mike Singletary but they couldn't get a ground game started against Arizona. Their 21 yards on 25 carries leads me to believe Arizona lost that game more than the 49ers won it. That won't happen against Seattle.

Are the Bills for real? Is Cadillac back? Lots of questions will be answered this game. None of which I'd like to have money on when they happen.
Denver failed to score an offensive touchdown in week 1 and should not have had any touchdowns if not for the "immaculate deflection." Cleveland hung with Minnesota until the second half when Adrian Peterson ran all over them. I like Denver to win at home, but not enough to lay any money down.

The line makers are just begging people to take San Diego, +110!?!?! The Ravens showed their offense can move the ball last week and even though the game was close their defense still only allowed 188 yards against the Chiefs. I expect Baltimore to shut down the running game again this week and force Phillip Rivers to win the game. San Diego avoided a huge let down in week 1 by beating Oakland with 18 seconds left on the game clock. Giving up 20 points to JaMarcus Russell and the Raiders offense is inexcusable if you consider yourself a Superbowl contender. I'm not going to bite on Vegas ploy, Ravens +3.
Brian Urlacher is out for the year. Jay Cutler struggled against a good but not great Green Bay defense. Even without Troy Polamalu Pittsburgh's defense is one of the tops in the league. After a week against the Titans, Pittsburgh will find a lot more space to work against Chicago on offense and shut down Chicago on defense.

Anything can happen in this NFC East match-up. Unlike the Redskins the Cowboys will try to take advantage of the Giants secondary. This could end in a shootout.
The Colts didn't look good in week 1 and now Peyton will be missing Gonzalez's for up to 8 weeks. Until some of the young receivers on Indianapolis show they can step up I'll be keeping my money away from games involving the Colts.
