Redskins Call an Audible, Hire a GM

After the surprise announcement yesterday of Vinny Cerrato’s resignation and the announcement that Bruce Allen was hired as the Redskins’ new General Manager, the entire fan base breathed a collective sigh of relief. There was new hope for the future and Snyder was praised for his mercy. There were proclamations made like “Christmas comes early for Redskins fans!” And local sports radio ratings spiked to levels not seen since the announcement of Gibbs 2.0.

Ok, enough shenanigans, lets get on with the show.

In his first press conference, Allen laid out his strategy for turning this franchise around, which started with developing a relationship with the current coaching staff before he made any decisions about the future. However, a mere 24 hours later the Redskins are “in talks” to hire Mike Shanahan as the new head coach.

Now I know what you are thinking (I am too) - wasn’t Shanahan hand-picked by Snyder, and didn’t he very publicly reject Snyder just two months ago, supposedly because he didn’t want the job mid-season?

I am assuming that Allen knew that he was going to hire Shanahan, probably as a condition of employment, despite announcing a completely different strategy at his press conference. Don’t get me wrong, I think Shanahan is a good coach and they should pursue him, I would just like to know that Allen has the latitude to make that decision on his own. Unfortunately I think it’s clear who is (and more importantly who isn’t) calling the shots down at Redskins Park.

Let’s examine Allen’s resume to try and find any truth to this allegation. Does he have experience working with a meddling owner? Check. How about experience working with a high profile coach who wants to make personnel decisions? Check. Has a win-now-with-veteran-players attitude? Check. Has extensive experience with contract negotiations and salary cap management? Check and check.

If Allen was hired based on the merits of his resume, then it looks like Snyder plans to employ the same operational strategy that he used with Vinny. Allen is just going to be a better administrator. What’s noticeably lacking on Allen’s resume is any history of consistently drafting and developing talent. The irony is that Vinny, for all his faults, has drafted (and signed) some good players over the years, but he had some major misses and he didn’t have the sense to stop throwing away draft picks or overpaying players, and obviously he didn’t know how to build for the future.

The bottom line is that Bruce Allen is not the harbinger of stability and success that the Redskins’ faithful expect after suffering through 10 years of Snyder’s meddling incompetence. And I certainly don’t believe that this represents a change in Snyder’s ownership philosophy. Dan Snyder scapegoated Vinny Cerrato and hired Bruce Allen simply to save face with Redskins’ fans, not to build the foundation for a successful organization. Maybe it will still evolve into one, but it will be in spite of Snyder’s ownership, and definitely not because of it.

Nats Active on Day 1 of Winter Meetings

The Nationals were active on the first day of MLB's 2009 winter meetings in Indianapolis, trading for right-handed reliever and former New York Yankee Brian Bruney, and signing 14 time All-Star catcher and 1999 MVP Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez to a 2-year contract worth somewhere in the $5 to $6 million range.

In trading for Bruney, the Nationals gave up a player to be named in an attempt to provide some help to the majors' worst bullpen in 2009. Bruney was 5-0 with an ERA just shy of 4.0 in 2009.

The acquisition of Rodriguez is an interesting one. The Nationals were rumored to have been considering acquiring a veteran catcher to help mentor young catcher Jesus Flores, who missed a sizeable portion of the 2009 season due to injury. I'm a bit surprised the Nationals signed Rodriguez to a 2-year deal, but he may get a decent amount of playing time and possibly help put fans in the seats. While these moves show an active first start, the Nationals' real needs lie in the acquisition of additional arms (both starters and relievers). Rumored to be interested in top free agent John Lackey, hopefully the Nationals consider other more plausible options (i.e. the Jon Garlands of the world). Truth be told, the Nats need to attempt to upgrade their rotation at any cost, regardless of who is picked up.

Big Week for Nats, Zimmerman

Setting aside the horrendous 2009 campaign, the Nationals have made some headlines this week, naming second-half 2009 interim manager Jim Riggleman the full-time manager for 2010. Riggleman was credited for bringing an inspired sense of play to the Nationals following the firing of Manny Acta in July. While he didn't exactly turn things around completely, the Nats went 33-42 under Riggleman, as compared to 26-61 under Acta.

Riggleman is a local guy, having grown up during the age of the Washington Senators in the 1950's and 60's. The Nationals job will be Riggleman's fourth, following previous managerial stints with the Cubs, Padres, and Mariners. While speculation had both former Mets and Rangers manager Bobby Valentine and former Yankees star Don Mattingly as potential candidates for the 2010 managerial role, Riggleman ultimately emerged as the best candidate. While the Nats certainly will not be expected to contend in 2010, Riggleman's bullpen management skills should hopefully help garner at least a few more curly W's.

3B Ryan Zimmerman added to his trophy case over the past few days, picking up his first gold glove and also winning the Silver Slugger award, given out to the best offensive player per position in each league. Zimmerman's defense was stellar throughout the season, standing in stark contrast to the horrific defense we saw across the rest of the diamond. Its good to see Zimmerman get rewarded for what was an incredibly well-rounded season both at the plate and on the field.

Now that the Nationals managerial search is over, we begin the wait to see what new pieces they can put in place for 2010. More to come.

Sweet Action: NFL Week 9

Kevin, the host of the D.C. Sports Guys, will start the NFL season with $100 of his own money. The objective is simple: make as much as possible betting on NFL games. No funds can be added during the season. He will either lose it all or be smoking a victory cigar on February 7, 2010

Ugly, just ugly. After week 8 the account only has $30.03 left.  I'm getting this post, which could be the last Sweet Action of the year, up a bit late this week.  Week 9 will risk it all $30.03 to win $308.11.

Check out the metrics for the entire season here: http://www.dcsportsguys.com/2009/09/sweet-action-kevins-nfl-20092010.html

Sweet Action: NFL Week 8

Kevin, the host of the D.C. Sports Guys, will start the NFL season with $100 of his own money. The objective is simple: make as much as possible betting on NFL games. No funds can be added during the season. He will either lose it all or be smoking a victory cigar on February 7, 2010

Positive results are always good results.  Thats the motto at least after winning a whooping $5 in week 7

This week only $30 are being risked for $60 in winnings.  The lines out of Vegas are not very attractive with either big double digit or small 3 point or less spreads and little in between.

Check out the metrics for the entire season here: http://www.dcsportsguys.com/2009/09/sweet-action-kevins-nfl-20092010.html

Team
Reason and Action
New York Giants

The Giants will get their bounce back game a week later then previously advertised.  The Eagles are coming off a bad loss to Oakland and a unimpressive win against the Redskins.  McNabb won't be able to afford to throw the ball at receivers feet all day against New York.

Action: Giants -1.5 and Teased
Arizona Cardinals

The Cardinals showed the Seattle game was no fluke by going into the Meadowlands and winning.  Both offense and defense are playing better each week.  The opposite could be said for Carolina.

Action: Cardinals -10.5 teased to -3.5
New Orleans Saints

Until proven otherwise New Orleans may be the best team in the NFL.  Their under-rated defense will have similar success as Dallas did in containing Atlanta's offense.

Action: Saints -11 teased to -4
Indianapolis Colts

The struggling 49ers will not see a boost from Alex Smith when they face Indianapolis this week.  The Colts should have no problem moving the ball against the slow San Francisco secondary.

Action: Colts -13.5 teased to -6.5
Dallas Cowboys

Much like a year ago Seattle's injuries are starting to pile up.  With 3 Seahawk tackles out DeMarcus Ware will be licking his chops in his pursuit of a still injured Matt Hasselbeck.

Action: Cowboys -10 teased to -3
Denver Broncos

The biggest surprise at 6-0 Denver has shown they can play great defense, allowing only 11 points a game, and control the ball on offense, Kyle Orton has a passer rating of 100.1.  The Ravens defense is not what it used to be and their receivers have dropped key passes in recent weeks.

Action: Broncos +3.5 teased to +10.5 and on the Money Line (+155)

Acta Given Second Chance with Indians

As we move closer to the resolution of the 2009 MLB season, Washington fans don't have much rooting interest. After all, the defending World Champion Phillies are back in the World Series again, awaiting to face the winner of the Yankees/Angels ALCS series. Interestingly enough though, the Nationals search for a 2010 manager may be moving closer to finalization after today's hiring of Manny Acta as the new manager of the Cleveland Indians.

Acta, who was dismissed by the Nationals earlier this year, signed a three-year deal today to become the manager of the Indians, and was also apparently offered the managerial job with the Astros earlier in the week. Apparently the Indians are willing to look past Acta's dismal record with the Nats, and give him a second chance. As I have said in previous posts, we don't know yet how great of a manager Manny Acta is (or could be). With the dismal assemblance of talent he was forced to work with as the Nats' skipper, it is very hard to tell whether Acta will become a long-term talent at the big league level. With the Indians, he inherits a team with more talent than the Nationals, yet which is arguably still in the rebuilding phase. Based on reports from a number of published sources, it appears that Acta's ability to communicate with Latino players was a key trait that made him attractive to the Indians.

Acta's hiring also may make the Nationals' 2010 managerial picture a bit more clear. While interim Jim Riggleman will apparently be considered for the full-time managerial gig, the Nationals have also been apparently considering Dodgers bench coach and former Yankees star Don Mattingly, as well as veteran manger and current ESPN analyst Bobby Valentine. I'm not so sure that Mattingly would be a good fit for the Nats, who I think need a more seasoned managerial presence who knows how to manage a bullpen. Time will tell though, which direction the Nats will go, as both Mattingly and Valentine were apparently strong candidates for the Cleveland job. More to come as info becomes available.

Sweet Action: NFL Week 7

Ouch... Week 6 was disastrous. Not a single bet won. Upsets by Oakland and Arizona hurt and the account only has $55.20 left.

This week I'll be risking $40 to win $214.98.

Reason and Action
New York Giants

The Giants are at home and ready to bounce back from a poor showing down in New Orleans.  Arizona won't be able to move the ball against the Giants like they did last week against the Seahawks.

Action: Giants Money Line (-320)
Atlanta Falcons

The high powered Atlanta offense will be able to score quickly and often against a suspect Dallas secondary.

Action: Atlanta Money Line (+180)
New Orleans Saints

The Saints offense isn't the only positive in New Orleans.  Greg Williams has turned the defense into a force to be reckoned with.

Action: Money Line (-275)
New York Jets

Even with 6 INTs last week the Jets were able to keep the game within 3 points.  Mark Sanchez won't have another terrible week and Oakland won't get back-to-back upsets.

Action: Jets Money Line (-270)
Minnesota Vikings

Pittsburgh has allowed Cincinnati, San Diego, and Detroit to score 20 points or more.  The Vikings keep finding ways to win games with the best running back and defensive line in the NFL.

Action: Vikings +6 / Teased
Green Bay Packers

The Browns are a terrible football team.  The Packers may have some offensive line issues but don't expect that to be a problem against Cleveland.

Action: Money Line (-450)
San Diego Chargers

The 32nd ranked Kansas City defense will face an actual offense this week.  San Diego will bounce back from their loss to Denver.

Action: Chargers -6
New England Patroits

Did you see last weeks game?  Tease the huge point spread just to be safe.

Peyton will have a field day against the St. Louis. Another game worthy of a tease.

Continuity is NOT the Redskins' Big Problem

So here they are, 2-4 with losses now to 3 teams previously in the “0-fer” category. The head coach looks over his head, the players are pointing fingers, and management is undermining team leadership, all of which has the media in a full-on feeding frenzy. Whats going on here? Is it time to panic yet? No. But change is obvious. I’m not talking about a new GM or new “personnel,” which are the en vogue things to say about the franchise right now. I don’t even think an in-season coaching change is necessary...yet. Why? The Redskins are who we thought they were. They have a solid-if-unassuming defense, and a veteran offense that’s been on a learning curve since last year. In addition, they are developing young offensive playmakers to fold into the mix (is it really possible for a GM not named Matt Millen to bust on 3 straight receivers?). We’ve all heard the complaints about the offensive line: that they aren’t very good, and there’s no depth, blah blah blah…but so what? That shouldn’t be the only lynchpin to the offense. Aaron Rodgers of the Green Bay Packers has been sacked more times than any other QB, and they still put up 26 points per game. Same thing with Big Ben, and the Steelers won the Super Bowl last year. Also, let’s not forget that this offense includes pro bowlers Portis, Cooley, Moss and Sellers.

The fact that the offense has been consistently awful for most of Zorn’s tenure makes me want to believe that coaching, specifically the play calling, is a big part of the problem. Especially when you look at what happened after Collins replaced Campbell yesterday. Exactly! Nothing happened because it was the same offense. You can’t upgrade the QB now, and Campbell is probably the best option for the rest of the season, so let’s work on the play calling. Unfortunately it doesn’t look like there is anybody on this staff that can take on this role with positive results. Enter Sherm Lewis. At least he’s had success before and I really hope he’s a quick study. By the way, this was clearly an issue last year, and it’s an indictment on Zorn that he didn’t fix it himself. I’m not saying it was handled properly, but in the end I think the right decision was made.

And despite the fact that the combination of VP of Football Operations Vinny Cerrato and owner Daniel Snyder are regarded as “the worst front office in the entire NFL”, which might be true, their recent moves make some sense. It was the worst-kept secret that the Redskins were shopping for a new QB this past offseason, now I think we all know why. And with last year’s defense playing solid but lacking true playmakers (aka game-changers), they went out and got some of the best ones available. So far this season the defense is ranked 5th in the league in both points per game and yards per game, and now with the presence of Haynesworth and Orakpo, we have 15 sacks already, on pace for 40 this year (we had 24 all of last season). DeAngelo Hall might not be able to tackle a dummy, but he is tied for 2nd in the league with 3 picks, while nobody else on the defense has any. To me this qualifies as “showing improvement.”

We can all be critical of the Redskins' front office for not believing in the “next man up” philosophy, and rightfully so – next to QB play it’s the fundamental difference between annual and perennial contenders. They have given away lots of draft picks, which they should stop doing, and they should stop restructuring (and guaranteeing) contracts – unless you’re talking about franchise QB’s or future HOF’ers. But regardless of what the front office has or hasn’t done in recent years, it’s reasonable to expect the team as it exists today to score more points than they have this year, especially with the soft schedule, even if the team was run by a bunch of pre-schoolers.

They can start by spending more time practicing and studying, and playing with more discipline and “heart,” whatever that means (if this is a reference to the Indian kid with the pet monkey from the Captain Planet cartoon, I doubt he could help. His powers were the weakest of the Planeteer quintet, the only thing he could do was communicate with nature. Lame. Earth was the most devastating force by far). Environmentally-conscious, cartoon super heroes notwithstanding, everything else is correctable, as long as the players realize that they are responsible for making the adjustments. And I think it’s ironic that some players have publicly asked the front office for a “vote of confidence” on Zorn’s job, which wouldn’t be necessary if they had just beaten the “0-fer’s.”

Oh well, at least 2010 looks like it’s going to be an uncapped year. I’m sure they will make plenty of headlines again this offseason.

Sweet Action: NFL Week 6

Kevin, the host of the D.C. Sports Guys, will start the NFL season with $100 of his own money. The objective is simple: make as much as possible betting on NFL games. No funds can be added during the season. He will either lose it all or be smoking a victory cigar on February 7, 2010

In week 5, the Texans, the 49ers and the Jets failed to deliver, preventing any big winnings.  The rest of the wagers however still produced an overall 31% increase over week 4 and the account is now up to $160.20.

This week I'll be risking $105 to win $1,254.87.

Team
Reason and Action
Minnesota Vikings
The Ravens have played well but they are up against a better offense and defense when they travel to Minnesota.  Minnesota defensive line will be able to stop Rice and put pressure on Flacco.

Action: Vikings -3
Cincinnati Bengals

Houston has shown they are a inconsistent team.  Arizona's questionable defense gave them problems last week shutting them down in the first half and returning a pick for a touchdown late in the game.

The Bengals defense will be able to shut down Houston's offense.

Action: -4 (buy .5 point) / Money Line (-230)
New Orleans Saints

Two of the best teams in the NFL will meet when the Saints take on the Giants.  In what should be a great game, give the edge to Saints who will be the first team to take advantage of the injuries that have hit the Giants this season.

Action: Money Line (-175)
Seattle Seahawks

Is Matt Hasselbeck starting? Yes.

Action: -3
New York Jets

The Bills are terrible.  The Jets defense won't have problems picking up the wildcat this week and will keep TO and the rest of Buffalo's offense in check.

Action: Money Line (-550)
New England Patriots

The Titans are a shell of their former selves.  Their only chance to win is to schedule a game against the Redskins.

Action: Money Line (-500)
Atlanta Falcons

The Falcons looked great coming out of the bye week against the 49ers.  Chicago's defense is not what it has been in years past and won't be able to stop Ryan throwing it deep.

Action: Money Line (-190)
Denver Broncos

Denver proved they belong by beating the Patriots in OT last week.  San Diego has stumbled to a 2-2 start and has problems in the Red Zone.  Take the team that has proved they know how to win a game.

Action: Money Line (+160)
Philadelphia Eagles

Green Bay Packers

Pittsburgh Steelers

The Eagles, Packers, and Steelers all play terrible football teams this week.  That means the lines are all 10 points or higher.  Upsets are unlikely here so use a teaser to your advantage.
