Acta Given Second Chance with Indians

As we move closer to the resolution of the 2009 MLB season, Washington fans don't have much rooting interest. After all, the defending World Champion Phillies are back in the World Series again, awaiting to face the winner of the Yankees/Angels ALCS series. Interestingly enough though, the Nationals search for a 2010 manager may be moving closer to finalization after today's hiring of Manny Acta as the new manager of the Cleveland Indians.

Acta, who was dismissed by the Nationals earlier this year, signed a three-year deal today to become the manager of the Indians, and was also apparently offered the managerial job with the Astros earlier in the week. Apparently the Indians are willing to look past Acta's dismal record with the Nats, and give him a second chance. As I have said in previous posts, we don't know yet how great of a manager Manny Acta is (or could be). With the dismal assemblance of talent he was forced to work with as the Nats' skipper, it is very hard to tell whether Acta will become a long-term talent at the big league level. With the Indians, he inherits a team with more talent than the Nationals, yet which is arguably still in the rebuilding phase. Based on reports from a number of published sources, it appears that Acta's ability to communicate with Latino players was a key trait that made him attractive to the Indians.

Acta's hiring also may make the Nationals' 2010 managerial picture a bit more clear. While interim Jim Riggleman will apparently be considered for the full-time managerial gig, the Nationals have also been apparently considering Dodgers bench coach and former Yankees star Don Mattingly, as well as veteran manger and current ESPN analyst Bobby Valentine. I'm not so sure that Mattingly would be a good fit for the Nats, who I think need a more seasoned managerial presence who knows how to manage a bullpen. Time will tell though, which direction the Nats will go, as both Mattingly and Valentine were apparently strong candidates for the Cleveland job. More to come as info becomes available.

Sweet Action: NFL Week 7

Kevin, the host of the D.C. Sports Guys, will start the NFL season with $100 of his own money. The objective is simple: make as much as possible betting on NFL games. No funds can be added during the season. He will either lose it all or be smoking a victory cigar on February 7, 2010

Ouch... Week 6 was disastrous. Not a single bet won. Upsets by Oakland and Arizona hurt and the account only has $55.20 left.

This week I'll be risking $40 to win $214.98.

Team
Reason and Action
New York Giants

The Giants are at home and ready to bounce back from a poor showing down in New Orleans.  Arizona won't be able to move the ball against the Giants like they did last week against the Seahawks.

Action: Giants Money Line (-320)
Atlanta Falcons

The high powered Atlanta offense will be able to score quickly and often against a suspect Dallas secondary.

Action: Atlanta Money Line (+180)
New Orleans Saints

The Saints offense isn't the only positive in New Orleans.  Greg Williams has turned the defense into a force to be reckoned with.

Action: Money Line (-275)
New York Jets

Even with 6 INTs last week the Jets were able to keep the game within 3 points.  Mark Sanchez won't have another terrible week and Oakland won't get back-to-back upsets.

Action: Jets Money Line (-270)
Minnesota Vikings

Pittsburgh has allowed Cincinnati, San Diego, and Detroit to score 20 points or more.  The Vikings keep finding ways to win games with the best running back and defensive line in the NFL.

Action: Vikings +6 / Teased
Green Bay Packers

The Browns are a terrible football team.  The Packers may have some offensive line issues but don't expect that to be a problem against Cleveland.

Action: Money Line (-450)
San Diego Chargers

The 32nd ranked Kansas City defense will face an actual offense this week.  San Diego will bounce back from their loss to Denver.

Action: Chargers -6
New England Patroits

Did you see last weeks game?  Tease the huge point spread just to be safe.

Action: Teased
Indianapolis Colts

Peyton will have a field day against the St. Louis. Another game worthy of a tease.

Continuity is NOT the Redskins' Big Problem

So here they are, 2-4 with losses now to 3 teams previously in the “0-fer” category. The head coach looks over his head, the players are pointing fingers, and management is undermining team leadership, all of which has the media in a full-on feeding frenzy. Whats going on here? Is it time to panic yet? No. But change is obvious. I’m not talking about a new GM or new “personnel,” which are the en vogue things to say about the franchise right now. I don’t even think an in-season coaching change is necessary...yet. Why? The Redskins are who we thought they were. They have a solid-if-unassuming defense, and a veteran offense that’s been on a learning curve since last year. In addition, they are developing young offensive playmakers to fold into the mix (is it really possible for a GM not named Matt Millen to bust on 3 straight receivers?). We’ve all heard the complaints about the offensive line: that they aren’t very good, and there’s no depth, blah blah blah…but so what? That shouldn’t be the only lynchpin to the offense. Aaron Rodgers of the Green Bay Packers has been sacked more times than any other QB, and they still put up 26 points per game. Same thing with Big Ben, and the Steelers won the Super Bowl last year. Also, let’s not forget that this offense includes pro bowlers Portis, Cooley, Moss and Sellers.

The fact that the offense has been consistently awful for most of Zorn’s tenure makes me want to believe that coaching, specifically the play calling, is a big part of the problem. Especially when you look at what happened after Collins replaced Campbell yesterday. Exactly! Nothing happened because it was the same offense. You can’t upgrade the QB now, and Campbell is probably the best option for the rest of the season, so let’s work on the play calling. Unfortunately it doesn’t look like there is anybody on this staff that can take on this role with positive results. Enter Sherm Lewis. At least he’s had success before and I really hope he’s a quick study. By the way, this was clearly an issue last year, and it’s an indictment on Zorn that he didn’t fix it himself. I’m not saying it was handled properly, but in the end I think the right decision was made.

And despite the fact that the combination of VP of Football Operations Vinny Cerrato and owner Daniel Snyder are regarded as “the worst front office in the entire NFL”, which might be true, their recent moves make some sense. It was the worst-kept secret that the Redskins were shopping for a new QB this past offseason, now I think we all know why. And with last year’s defense playing solid but lacking true playmakers (aka game-changers), they went out and got some of the best ones available. So far this season the defense is ranked 5th in the league in both points per game and yards per game, and now with the presence of Haynesworth and Orakpo, we have 15 sacks already, on pace for 40 this year (we had 24 all of last season). DeAngelo Hall might not be able to tackle a dummy, but he is tied for 2nd in the league with 3 picks, while nobody else on the defense has any. To me this qualifies as “showing improvement.”

We can all be critical of the Redskins' front office for not believing in the “next man up” philosophy, and rightfully so – next to QB play it’s the fundamental difference between annual and perennial contenders. They have given away lots of draft picks, which they should stop doing, and they should stop restructuring (and guaranteeing) contracts – unless you’re talking about franchise QB’s or future HOF’ers. But regardless of what the front office has or hasn’t done in recent years, it’s reasonable to expect the team as it exists today to score more points than they have this year, especially with the soft schedule, even if the team was run by a bunch of pre-schoolers.

They can start by spending more time practicing and studying, and playing with more discipline and “heart,” whatever that means (if this is a reference to the Indian kid with the pet monkey from the Captain Planet cartoon, I doubt he could help. His powers were the weakest of the Planeteer quintet, the only thing he could do was communicate with nature. Lame. Earth was the most devastating force by far). Environmentally-conscious, cartoon super heroes notwithstanding, everything else is correctable, as long as the players realize that they are responsible for making the adjustments. And I think it’s ironic that some players have publicly asked the front office for a “vote of confidence” on Zorn’s job, which wouldn’t be necessary if they had just beaten the “0-fer’s.”

Oh well, at least 2010 looks like it’s going to be an uncapped year. I’m sure they will make plenty of headlines again this offseason.

Sweet Action: NFL Week 6

Kevin, the host of the D.C. Sports Guys, will start the NFL season with $100 of his own money. The objective is simple: make as much as possible betting on NFL games. No funds can be added during the season. He will either lose it all or be smoking a victory cigar on February 7, 2010

In week 5, the Texans, the 49ers and the Jets failed to deliver, preventing any big winnings.  The rest of the wagers however still produced an overall 31% increase over week 4 and the account is now up to $160.20.

This week I'll be risking $105 to win $1,254.87.

Team
Reason and Action
Minnesota Vikings
The Ravens have played well but they are up against a better offense and defense when they travel to Minnesota.  Minnesota defensive line will be able to stop Rice and put pressure on Flacco.

Action: Vikings -3
Cincinnati Bengals

Houston has shown they are a inconsistent team.  Arizona's questionable defense gave them problems last week shutting them down in the first half and returning a pick for a touchdown late in the game.

The Bengals defense will be able to shut down Houston's offense.

Action: -4 (buy .5 point) / Money Line (-230)
New Orleans Saints

Two of the best teams in the NFL will meet when the Saints take on the Giants.  In what should be a great game, give the edge to Saints who will be the first team to take advantage of the injuries that have hit the Giants this season.

Action: Money Line (-175)
Seattle Seahawks

Is Matt Hasselbeck starting? Yes.

Action: -3
New York Jets

The Bills are terrible.  The Jets defense won't have problems picking up the wildcat this week and will keep TO and the rest of Buffalo's offense in check.

Action: Money Line (-550)
New England Patriots

The Titans are a shell of their former selves.  Their only chance to win is to schedule a game against the Redskins.

Action: Money Line (-500)
Atlanta Falcons

The Falcons looked great coming out of the bye week against the 49ers.  Chicago's defense is not what it has been in years past and won't be able to stop Ryan throwing it deep.

Action: Money Line (-190)
Denver Broncos

Denver proved they belong by beating the Patriots in OT last week.  San Diego has stumbled to a 2-2 start and has problems in the Red Zone.  Take the team that has proved they know how to win a game.

Action: Money Line (+160)
Philadelphia Eagles

Green Bay Packers

Pittsburgh Steelers

The Eagles, Packers, and Steelers all play terrible football teams this week.  That means the lines are all 10 points or higher.  Upsets are unlikely here so use a teaser to your advantage.

Sweet Action: NFL Week 5

Kevin, the host of the D.C. Sports Guys, will start the NFL season with $100 of his own money. The objective is simple: make as much as possible betting on NFL games. No funds can be added during the season. He will either lose it all or be smoking a victory cigar on February 7, 2010.

In week 4 of NFL Picks I correctly picked 13 of 14 games.  Unfortunately the game I got wrong, Buffalo vs. Miami, I used in two of last week's Sweet Action bets.

On the plus side, the remaining two bets won bringing in $44.91.  That raises the total account value to $122.20.

This week I'm putting up $70 to win $1,917.86.  The 9 team parlay skews the numbers a bit, but house money is fun to play with so LET IT RIDE!

Check out the metrics for the entire season here: http://www.dcsportsguys.com/2009/09/sweet-action-kevins-nfl-20092010.html

Team
Reason and Action
Minnesota Vikings
They play the Rams.

Action: Vikings -10.5 and Teased
New York Giants

Even with Eli listed as questionable the Giants should have no problem sending Oakland back to California 1-4.

Action: Giants Teased
Cincinnati Bengals

The Cleveland team the Bengals faced last week led by Derek Anderson is not the same Cleveland team the Raven's faced in week 3.  I wouldn't put a lot of stock into comparing those match-ups.  The Bengals with Carson Palmer at 100% can hang with any team.  If they lose, the game is most likely going to be close. It most definitely won't be by more than a couple touchdowns.  At +8.5 this game is begging to be teased 6 points or more.

Action: Bengals +9 (buy .5) and Teased
Houston Texans

The Cardinals defense is not what it was in the playoffs last year.  Kurt Warner is also having problems staying upright in the pocket.

Even if this game becomes an offensive battle, Houston showed that they can win a shootout when they played the Titans week 2.

Action: Texans +6 (buy .5) and Teased
Philadelphia Eagles

It doesn't matter who starts at QB.  The Eagles will beat Tampa Bay.  No money line on this game so tease the points to a more respectable number.

Action: Eagles Teased
Pittsburgh Steelers

The Lions may be better than they were last year, but there is no way they will beat the Steelers.  Unfortunately the Steelers have a knack for keeping scores close so bring the -11 to -4 in a 3 or 4 team Teaser.

Action: Steelers Teased
Seattle Seahawks

Hasselbeck is back.  Seattle is a much better team with him in the line up. At -2 consider Seattle "on sale" this week at home against Jacksonville.

Action: Seahawks -2
Indianapolis Colts

Matt Schaub threw for 357 yards and 4 touchdowns against the Titans in week 2.  The Colts have a QB by the name of Peyton Manning.  He might have a career day.

Also, the Colts defense is only allowing an average of 15.5 points per game.  Bad news for Kerry Collins and Tennessee.

Action: Colts -4 and on the Money Line -210
Dallas Cowboys

Romo may not be playing like a top level QB, but Dallas has enough talent to get past the lowly Chiefs.

Action: Dallas on the Money Line -400
San Francisco 49ers
The 49ers proved they can hang with the best in the league when they nearly took out Minnesota in week 3.

The Falcons have yet to put together a consistent ground attack which will be the difference in this game.

Acton: 49ers -3
New England Patriots
Baring a repeat of the miracle that occurred in week 1, Denver will experience what the Jets and Ravens already have.  The Patriots will hand another team their first loss of the season.

Action: Pats -3 and on the Money Line -170
N.Y. Jets
Rex Ryan will not be fooled by the Wildcat.  The Jets defense will be able to stop anything Miami throws their way.

Action: Jets -2

The Season that Wasn't -- Nats Year in Review

Leave it to the Washington Nationals to rip off a 7 game win streak to end yet another 100+ loss season. The 2009 Washington Nationals have come and gone, and that is probably a good thing for Nationals fans and baseball in general. The Nats finished the 2009 campaign with a record of 59-103, the worst in baseball. Interestingly enough, the 2008 club finished 59-102, due only to the fact that a late season scheduled game against the Marlins was never made-up.

While the win-loss record will dominate the view of the 2009 Nationals in the history of the Expos/Nationals franchises, there were some positive things to note throughout the year. First, the Nats got rid of troubled ex-GM Jim Bowden, who's tenure was marked by personal problems, controversies surrounding prospects from the Dominican Republic, and his desire to make the Nationals the Cincinnati Reds of the NL East. In exchange, the Nationals have new life with Mike Rizzo, who has already shown he is not afraid to make moves, including his mid-season acquisitions of Nyjer Morgan and Sean Burnett, and his trade of oft-injured first baseman and soon to be free agent Nick Johnson to the Florida Marlins on the cusp of the trading deadline. We also saw the Nats follow through and sign their 1st round draft pick, pitching phenom Stephen Strasburg. For a team that has been much maligned for its problems in the public relations arena, the Nats have already created a Strasburg circus that will no question continue to be developed when he arrives in the big leagues, most likely during the 2010 season. We also saw interim manager Jim Riggleman breathe new life into a club that had nothing to play for from the start of the season. Whether or not he will be back next season remains to be seen, but he certainly should be given strong consideration to have the interim tag removed from his title. And last but not least, Ryan Zimmerman lived up to the hype that has been associated with him since his arrival in Washington in late 2005. Zimmerman had an all-star season at 3rd base for the Nats, and may very well win his first gold glove this offseason. More importantly, he secured a long-term deal with the Nats that will keep him as the face of the franchise for years to come.

In addition to solidifying a manager for 2010, the Nats have several areas to focus on in contemplating offseason moves. While Willingham and Morgan have likely secured two of the three outfield spots, the jury is still out on Elijah Dukes. I expect the Nationals to look into the corner outfielder market to see what upgrades are available. The corner infield positions are sured up with Dunn at first and Zimmerman at third. Dunn should be good trade bait come mid-season, and the Nats should begin the process of scouting prospects from potential 2010 contenders, and in particular AL teams that may need some added pop to their lineup down the stretch. After all, it is highly unlikely that Dunn will resign after his deal finishes up next year, and the last thing this team needs is another wasted opportunity to deal expiring contracts for prospects (yes, I am talking about Alfonso Soriano...and Ronnie Belliard..and Christian Guzman...and Dimitri Young, but enough naming names).

There has been a lot of talk within the organization of moving Guzman from SS to 2B. His has dropped precipitously at short, and there is a sense within the organization that moving him to 2B may prolong his career. Defense aside, Guzman can still hit, and can continue to serve as a solid #2 hitter to advance speedy leadoff man Nyjer Morgan. A move by Guzman means question marks at SS, with Ian Desmond as the likely candidate for the starting job. Although Desmond has shown some erratic defense, he has also proven he can hit, and could be a welcome asset to the lineup. Jesus Flores will come back from shoulder surgery to start 2010, signifying that the Nats will need to look for some alternative options behind the plate. Josh Bard and Will Nieves have done admirable jobs in Flores' absence, but are not long-term solutions. Expect the Nats to make testing the market for catchers a key offseason priority.

Frankly, I don't even know where to begin with the pitching situation. The Nats have only one returning pitcher who has solidified a spot in the rotation, and that is John Lannan. Apart from him, there are two many question marks to even venture guesses as to what happens to the rotation and bullpen. I predict a lot of change, with the Nats likely to pursue mid-level veteran talent (i.e. the Randy Wolf's and Rich Hardens' of the world)to attempt to bring some stability to the mound.

When all is said and done, there is no question that the 2009 Nationals lived up to the low level of expectations set forth for them. The 2010 Nationals won't be contenders either, but here's hoping they make some moves for the long-term betterment of the club.

Sweet Action: NFL Week 4

Kevin, the host of the D.C. Sports Guys, will start the NFL season with $100 of his own money. The objective is simple: make as much as possible betting on NFL games. No funds can be added during the season. He will either lose it all or be smoking a victory cigar on February 7, 2010.

Oh Atlanta.... If the Falcons would have scored just 5 more points there would be $136 more to bet with this week. Instead Week 3 added only $28.96 to bring the account total to $77.29.
