Big Week for Nats, Zimmerman

Setting aside the horrendous 2009 campaign, the Nationals have made some headlines this week, naming second-half 2009 interim manager Jim Riggleman the full-time manager for 2010. Riggleman was credited for bringing an inspired sense of play to the Nationals following the firing of Manny Acta in July. While he didn't exactly turn things around completely, the Nats went 33-42 under Riggleman, as compared to 26-61 under Acta.

Riggleman is a local guy, having grown up during the age of the Washington Senators in the 1950's and 60's. The Nationals job will be Riggleman's fourth, following previous managerial stints with the Cubs, Padres, and Mariners. While speculation had both former Mets and Rangers manager Bobby Valentine and former Yankees star Don Mattingly as potential candidates for the 2010 managerial role, Riggleman ultimately emerged as the best candidate. While the Nats certainly will not be expected to contend in 2010, Riggleman's bullpen management skills should hopefully help garner at least a few more curly W's.

3B Ryan Zimmerman added to his trophy case over the past few days, picking up his first gold glove and also winning the Silver Slugger award, given out to the best offensive player per position in each league. Zimmerman's defense was stellar throughout the season, standing in stark contrast to the horrific defense we saw across the rest of the diamond. Its good to see Zimmerman get rewarded for what was an incredibly well-rounded season both at the plate and on the field.

Now that the Nationals managerial search is over, we begin the wait to see what new pieces they can put in place for 2010. More to come.

Sweet Action: NFL Week 9

Kevin, the host of the D.C. Sports Guys, will start the NFL season with $100 of his own money. The objective is simple: make as much as possible betting on NFL games. No funds can be added during the season. He will either lose it all or be smoking a victory cigar on February 7, 2010

Ugly, just ugly. After week 8 the account only has $30.03 left.  I'm getting this post, which could be the last Sweet Action of the year, up a bit late this week.  Week 9 will risk it all $30.03 to win $308.11.

Sweet Action: NFL Week 8

Positive results are always good results.  Thats the motto at least after winning a whooping $5 in week 7

This week only $30 are being risked for $60 in winnings.  The lines out of Vegas are not very attractive with either big double digit or small 3 point or less spreads and little in between.

Check out the metrics for the entire season here: http://www.dcsportsguys.com/2009/09/sweet-action-kevins-nfl-20092010.html

Team
Reason and Action
New York Giants

The Giants will get their bounce back game a week later then previously advertised.  The Eagles are coming off a bad loss to Oakland and a unimpressive win against the Redskins.  McNabb won't be able to afford to throw the ball at receivers feet all day against New York.

Action: Giants -1.5 and Teased
Arizona Cardinals

The Cardinals showed the Seattle game was no fluke by going into the Meadowlands and winning.  Both offense and defense are playing better each week.  The opposite could be said for Carolina.

Action: Cardinals -10.5 teased to -3.5
New Orleans Saints

Until proven otherwise New Orleans may be the best team in the NFL.  Their under-rated defense will have similar success as Dallas did in containing Atlanta's offense.

Action: Saints -11 teased to -4
Indianapolis Colts

The struggling 49ers will not see a boost from Alex Smith when they face Indianapolis this week.  The Colts should have no problem moving the ball against the slow San Francisco secondary.

Action: Colts -13.5 teased to -6.5
Dallas Cowboys

Much like a year ago Seattle's injuries are starting to pile up.  With 3 Seahawk tackles out DeMarcus Ware will be licking his chops in his pursuit of a still injured Matt Hasselbeck.

Action: Cowboys -10 teased to -3
Denver Broncos

The biggest surprise at 6-0 Denver has shown they can play great defense, allowing only 11 points a game, and control the ball on offense, Kyle Orton has a passer rating of 100.1.  The Ravens defense is not what it used to be and their receivers have dropped key passes in recent weeks.

Action: Broncos +3.5 teased to +10.5 and on the Money Line (+155)

Bet #30:  3 Team Teaser
  1. Indianapolis Colts -6½ Sun@1:00p
    Competitor: San Francisco 49ers
    Teased 7.0 points

  2. New York Giants +5½ Sun@1:00p

  3. Arizona Cardinals -3½ Sun@4:15p
    Competitor: Carolina Panthers
    Teased 7.0 points
Risk US$ 15.00 to win US$ 21.00

Bet #31: 4 Team Teaser
  1. Denver Broncos +10½ Sun@1:00p
    Competitor: Baltimore Ravens
    Teased 7.0 points

  2. Dallas Cowboys -3 Sun@1:00p

Risk US$ 10.00 to win US$ 20.00

  1. Denver Broncos +155 Sun@1:00p
