Postgame Stats: Washington Capitals vs. Montreal Canadiens

Game: Washington Capitals vs. Montreal Canadiens
When: April 28, 2010
In their 7th meeting of the playoffs the Washington Capitals lost to the Montreal Canadiens 2-1. The following is a statistical breakdown for the April 28, 2010 game and totals for the 2009-2010 playoffs.

Morning Roundup: Game 7

Another Game 7

So here we are again, about to witness what is possibly the most difficult to predict event in any sport. Home or away, higher seed or lower, momentum or not, favorite or underdog, none of it seems to matter when it comes to Game 7 of a Stanley Cup playoff series. The Caps are here for the forth time in three years, having been pushed to the brink by a Montreal Canadiens team, riding the suddenly scorching hot glove (also stick, blocker, left pad and right pad for that matter) of Jaroslav Halak. The Caps have had back to back chances to finish off this Canadiens team. In Game 5, they blew it with a slow start. They somehow underestimated a Montreal team that came out playing like they had nothing to lose. When the Caps finally got it together, they dominated, but were stonewalled by a quickly simmering Halak.

The Capitals played perhaps their best first period of the series on Monday but with Halak suddenly possessed by the spirit Ken Dryden they found themselves down 2-0 after one. And with every sparkling save Halak made, Alex Ovechkin and his running mates gripped their sticks a little tighter. They passed, passed, passed and passed some more on the power play. They came to believe that only the perfect shot could beat this wunderkind. But of course after 54 shots were fired Halak’s way the only one that did find its way past the keeper was the one that had no business going on in. It was a shot that was headed wide but redirected by the stick of Eric Fehr. It was a shot that no goalie, not even this one, could stop. It was the type of goal that seems fluky but in reality is the result of hard work and determination. It is the type of goal that wins playoff series.

This is why if the Caps are going to win this Game 7 they have to heed the lessons of the previous two. The Caps cannot get off to another slow start. More times than I’d like to remember this year, this team has not played a complete 60 minutes but still comeback in spectacular fashion to win. But my heart (and my furniture) would prefer the Caps did not pull another Game 2. That would be playing with fire.

Speaking of fire, if Halak plays another game like Game 6. The Caps are finished. It’s over. The best way to prevent that from happening is to make Halak feel like the walls are closing in on him. Mike Knuble needs to reintroduce his rear end to Halak’s grill. Jason Chimera needs to take his blazing speed towards the net. Brooks Laich needs to remember where you go if you want goals. They need to get Halak off his game and out of the zone he was in in Game 6.

It seemed like luck was on the Canadiens side in Game 6. All the bounces were going Montreal’s way. On one side, every shot found its way off a Capital’s stick and passed Semyon Varlamov. And on the other side, every rebound found its way over or around those same sticks. But I believe you make your own luck in sports. A wise man once said that luck is when preparation meets opportunity. That was the Canadiens in Game 6. But like Professor Backstrom said before OT in Game 2, “I think it’s our turn.”

Morning Roundup: Capitals stumble, Dunn's bat comes alive

When the Caps play, Nats win

Tonight's 5-1 victory over the Dodgers made the Nationals a perfect 5-0 on days the Capitals have had a playoff game. In these five wins the Nationals have outscored their opponents 31 - 9 and their starters have pitched 34.2 of 45 total innings (76%).

In the previous 5 games that have not fallen on a Capitals playoff game the Nationals are are just 1-4. During those games the Nationals have been outscored by their opponents 40-23 and their starters pitched only 18.1 of 45 total innings (40.2%).

Obviously the Nationals need the Capitals to push as many series as possible to 7 games so they have a chance of being .500 by the time Strasburg gets called up in June.

Nats' Opening Day 2010 -- Hope for the Future?

The Washington Nationals kick off the 2010 campaign this afternoon at Nationals Park, taking on Roy Halladay in his Philadelphia Phillies debut. Its tough to see the Nats treating fans to an opening day win against one of the best pitchers in baseball and arguably the best top to bottom lineup in the National League, but the 2010 Nationals should be an improvement from last season's group, which posted the majors' worst record for the second season in a row. The Nationals send young ace John Lannan to the mound in a game that very well just might be the sign of a promising future for the club. At this point, there is no where to go but upwards, and that is exactly the attitude that Nationals ownership, players, and fans should have. As we move closer to the first pitch of the 2010 season, below are a few story lines fans can keep their attention to during the early portion of the 2010 campaign.
  1. Strasburg's arrival - the better part of the early season will be spent watching Strasburg's development in the minors, as he is scheduled to start at AA Harrisburg on April 11th. I'd expect Washington to be abuzz with Strasburg fever in anticipation of a mid season callup. This will be especially true if the Nationals come out flat early on in the year, as the arrival of the phenom will be something that lures fans in during the dog days of summer. Other likely callups include reliever Drew Storen (the Nationals other 2009 first round pick) and former Terp Justin Maxwell, who has had stints with the club in recent years and may be a likely candidate to solidfy the outfield come mid-season.

  2. Bullpen Improvement? - The Nationals have hopefully improved their horrendous 2009 bullpen, adding Brian Bruney from the Yankees, Matt Capps from the Pirates and Miguel Batista from the Mariners. Not exactly a list of household names, but here's to hoping that these guys can breathe some new life into a relief corp that blew game after game last season.

  3. New Look Infield - The opening day infield features familiar faces at the corners (Dunn and Zimmerman) with rookie Ian Desmond, a lat season callup who impressed in late 2009, and incoming veteran Adam Kennedy manning second base. Christian Guzman appears to be the odd man out but will likely be a solid utility player and may even takeover a starting job should Kennedy or Desmond fail to produce early on.

  4. Who's in Right Field? - The release of Elijah Dukes leaves right field open to a potential platoon of Willie Harris and Willy Taveras. Neither is likely to impress from the plate, but both have shown their abilities to cover significant ground area in right. Potential callups (i.e. Justin Maxwell) could change this, but for now.
So what will 2010 bring to the Nationals? Only time will tell. Contention is highly unlikely, but improvement and hope for the future may give fans a sense of optimism for the first time in years.

Maryland's Greivis Vasquez Wins Bob Cousey Award

Greivis Vasquez won the 2009-2010 Bob Cousey award for the nation's best point guard. It might not take the sting out of the way the season ended but it is nice to know that he beat out the likes of Evan Turner, Jon Scheyer and John Wall.

Guess coming back for his senior season did have some huge advantages.
