- Segment 2 (50:10): Nationals, Orioles, Wizards, Capitals

- Segment 3 (01:10:00): NFL, Ravens, Redskins Week 3 Preview

Sweet Action: Week 3 Recap

Kevin, the host of the D.C. Sports Guys, will start the NFL season with $100 of his own money. The objective is simple: make as much money as possible betting on NFL games. No funds can be added during the season and if the account ever hits $0 Kevin will have to pack it in and admit defeat.

Damn you Houston!  It's official, I'm done with teams from Texas.  All is not lost though, bets #15 and #16 made it through resulting in... wait for it... you are going to be impressed.... a week generating $12.31 in winnings.  Call my boss, tell him I'm not coming in tomorrow, the next day, or ever again.  I plan on living out the rest of my days betting on the NFL.  Tomorrow eleven of my closest friends and I are going out and I'm treating everyone to one scrumptious item off the delicious dollar menu at McDonalds. Victory is mine!

Kidding aside, the motto is to have fun, survive, hit big, repeat.  Unfortunately the first three weeks have been all about surviving and no big opportunities have hit just yet.  As long as the safe bets cover the risky bets you can stay alive another week, hope to hit the big one and keep moving slowly in the right direction.  At least that is what I tell myself.

Ending account total: $120.97.  Check out all the bets and statistics here.

Sweet Action: Looking to double up in Week #3

Kevin, the host of the D.C. Sports Guys, will start the NFL season with $100 of his own money. The objective is simple: make as much money as possible betting on NFL games. No funds can be added during the season and if the account ever hits $0 Kevin's will have to pack it in and admit defeat.

Last week ended up in the red but overall I'm hanging on to $8.66 in winnings.  Actually, I think "up over 8% on the year" sounds a lot better, so lets go with that.  This week I'm risking $50 to win $111.39 in an effort to get the account over $200.

TeamReason

Bengals

This game will showcase two teams heading in opposite directions. Last week, the Bengals did not score a touchdown but were still able to beat the Ravens by forcing Flacco into 4 INTs.  A vast improvement over the dud they laid in week one against the Patriots.  The offense has yet to click with the addition of Owens but this may be the week it happens.

Carolina is searching for answers after falling apart in the second half against the Giants then struggling against the Buccaneers. Clausen will get his first start for the Panthers today but don't expect any miracles.  Even if the Bengals don't find their grove on offense, their defense will be enough to win.

Action: -3 in parlay

Steelers

The story for Pittsburgh doesn't change, if their defense plays well they always have a chance to win.  The Steelers started the season facing off against two of the best running teams in the NFL, the Falcons and the Titans.  Neither team could manage more than 58 yards on the ground.  Don't expect Cadillac Williams to break that trend, especially with Casey Hampton coming back at nose tackle this week.  Tampa Bay will have to rely on Josh Freeman to pick apart the the Steelers defense though the air.  Good luck with that.

Action: -3 in parlay

Texans

Could it be? The Cowboys end the week at 0-3? Yes, and at the hand of their in-state "rival" the Texans.  The Cowboys YET AGAIN are "among the leagues biggest disappointments."  When does it turn from being a disappointment to just being a mediocre football team? Houston's offense is hitting on all cylinders and was able to rally against the Redskins scoring 17 unanswered points in the second half to push the game to OT, where they won.

The Texans started the year by beating one of the AFC's perennial best then showed they can overcome adversity in week 2.  The Cowboys have showed for 2 weeks that they are a big disappointment.  Even without their starting left tackle Duane Brown expect the Texans to be able to move the ball at will.

Action: -3 in parlay

Colts

Champ Bailey was seen on crutches the same week that Colts are coming to town.  That is not good news if your a Broncos fan.  Oh, and Andre Goodman is also listed a questionable.  Their backups? All rookies.  Let the Peyton Manning smack-down begin.

Action: Money Line -250 in parlay

Lions

I'm going to say it, I think the Lions have a shot to win this game.  Even with Shaun Hill at QB the Lions have been playing better football this season than the Vikings.  Something is off with the Vikings, maybe it's the injuries, maybe it's Favre, maybe it's Adrian Peterson getting stood up on 4th and goal.

The Lions should have won against the Bears and rallied to within 3 points of the Eagles.  Even if they lose this week it won't be by 11.

Action: +11 in parlay
Falcons, Titans, Raiders, CheifsIt's a toss up if any of these teams will win, but all should be able to keep their respective games close.  Whenever a few close game present themselves look to tease the dog as much as you can.

Action: Teased

A bit late this week posting the recap.  Won't bore you with why, so here we go.  Week #2 did not go as planned ending in a $12 loss.  The Saints had trouble with the wind in San Francisco, I'm an idiot for betting on the Cowboys to do anything right, and Seattle found a way to lose by more than 16.5 points.  Only one bet made it though this week, but it was enough to keep the losses to a minimum.  Should have put a lot more on Green Bay and Atlanta.

Sweet Action: Tease Me In Week 2

Kevin, the host of the D.C. Sports Guys, will start the NFL season with $100 of his own money. The objective is simple: make as much money as possible betting on NFL games. No funds can be added during the season and if the account ever hits $0 Kevin's will have to pack it in and admit defeat.

In Week #2 I'm relying heavily on heavily favored teams.  The problem with betting on big favorites is how to work around the point spreads.  The Packers for instance are -14 and forget about the Money Line because that has been taken off the boards.  So, what to do?

Enter the teaser.  Teasers for those that don't know require at least 2 teams and alter the point spread in your favor from 6 to 13 points.  If your willing to put 3 or 4 teams into a single bet the spreads and payouts allow you to stick to the teams you feel good about instead of trying to find an upset or take a chance on a game you feel will be too close to call.

Along with the teasers this week is one parlay.  It's a long shot, and is the result of the guys picks for Week #2.  Count 'em, 11, thats right all the guys agreed on 11 picks this week.  That makes for a pretty boring NFL Picks blog, but could make for an exciting parlay.  I took 8 of those teams and put them into a small risk high reward parlay that could be the spark I need to really get this Sweet Action segment off the ground.  I'm not going to analyze every match-up in that wager but here are my reasons for the teams in my other three bets.

Total of $60 on the line to win $209.26

TeamReason

Packers

The Bills are terrible.  In their home opening 15-10 loss to the Dolphins they produced an NFL low 166 yards of offense, 38 of which was on the ground.  Now they head to Green Bay for the Packers home opener.

The Packers on the other hand not not terrible.  In fact they are pretty damn good and lived up to preseason hype by ending a 9 game losing streak in the city of Philadelphia.  Aaron Rodgers will have a big day and even without the services of Ryan Grant expect Green Bay to be able to run the ball all over Buffalo's defense.

Action: Teased

Falcons

After a tough OT loss in Pittsburgh expect the Falcons to bounce back at home against the Cardinals.

The Cardinals barely got past a pesky Rams team lead by rookie QB Sam Bradford last week.  Bradford attempted 55 passes resulting in 253 yards, a TD and 3 INTs.  One INT was immediately lost when fumbled and the last INT was at the very end of the game.

Not only do the Falcons have a more seasoned QB in Matt Ryan they also won't have to rely on him throwing the ball 55 times.  Look for a heavy dose of Michael Turner to loosen up an already weak Arizona defense.

Action: Teased, Money Line

Saints

There is a theme this week.  Good teams playing bad teams.  The Saints proved they had not lost a step in their Thursday night opening win against the Vikings.  The 49ers on the other hand lost to a Seattle team that is rebuilding and trying their luck with a college coach at the helm.

Don't expect the 49ers to bounce back this week.  Players in San Francisco are already complaining about the offensive play calling which has led to Mike Singletary on a wild 'rat' hunt.

Action: Teased, Money Line

Cowboys

It always pains me to put money on any bet that has the Cowboys on the winning end, but this is more about Chicago.

If Calvin Johnson holds on to the ball for another half second the Bears are 0-1.  Chicago gave up 4 sacks in week 1 and were only able to put up 19 points at home against a Lions team that is still not very good.

Dallas is a better team than Detroit.  Their defense is better and their offense with the return of Marc Colombo and Kyle Kosier to the line is a lot better.  Plus, they are at home.  Add it all up and it's a win for the Cowgirls.

Action: Teased, Money Line
Steelers, SeahawksEvery now and then there are opportunities with teaser bets that allow you to cover a losing team with a huge point spread.  This week the Steelers and Seahawks fit that bill.  The Steelers are a great defensive team and rarely lose any game by more than a couple TDs.  The Seahawks travel to Denver to take on a Broncos team that had trouble with Jacksonville and appear to have no clear direction for the franchise at this point in time.  The Steelers and Seahawks may not win but being able to get them at +19 and +16.5 respectively is something I couldn't pass up.

Thanks to everyone who came out for our first live show at Griffin's Grill. We had a great time and look forward to broadcasting at Griffin's from 11am-1pm every Sunday for the rest of the NFL season.

Sweet Action: Baby steps in Week 1

Kevin, the host of the D.C. Sports Guys, will start the NFL season with $100 of his own money. The objective is simple: make as much money as possible betting on NFL games. No funds can be added during the season and if the account ever hits $0 Kevin's will have to pack it in and admit defeat.

The first week of the NFL season is always the hardest to judge.  Limited play from starters and simplified package sets dominate the pre-season leaving one to look at how a team ended the previous season and guess how roster moves will translate to on field performance. That's not to say you can't make informed decisions on which way games will go, but in a league that has a 50% turnover rate in playoff teams year-to-year it's does make the job a bit more difficult.

Now that I've made plenty of excuses for myself, on to the rest of my picks for Week 1.  Check out my first two bets here.  Bet #1 is still active and I'm hunting down Garrett Hartley to cover my losses on Bet #2.

I'm keeping the wagers light this week, after all I'm supposed to keep this blog segment going for most of the season.  The objective this week is to survive and hopefully crank up the wagers in weeks two and three.  Altogether I have $40 on the line to win $87.94.

Here are the teams I'm riding to victory:

TeamReason

Giants

The Giants are out for revenge.  On a late season skid, the Giants were dealing with injuries, poor linebacker play and questions at safety when the Panthers rolled out of the Meadowlands with a 41-9 victory.

Since then the Giants have added two Pro Bowlers Keith Bulluck and Antrel Rolle to sure up defensive holes.  Carolina on the other hand lost 5 starters on defense including the departure of Julis Peppers.

Look for the Giants to be active on the defensive line to stop the run and force Carolina to put the ball in the hands of Matt Moore.  Moore proved to be better than Delhomme last season but has not shown that he can take over a game.

The Giants may not cover the 7pt spread but they should still win the game.

Action: Money Line -265

Cardinals

The Cardinals lost Kurt Warner to retirement, Antrel Rolle to the Giants and made the right decision in cutting Matt Leinart.

Although it's to be seen if Derek Anderson can recapture his magic from 2007 and if Joey Porter will help out a defense that struggled in the playoffs, the Cardinals are a better team than the Rams.

The Rams who will be starting rookie QB Sam Bradford are looking to have a season similar to Detroit's first season with Matt Stafford.  With Donnie Avery out the Rams did acquire Mark Clayton from the Ravens, but it won't be enough, by a long shot.

Action: Money Line -200

Packers

The Packers have everything going for them this year and are legitimate Superbowl contenders.

The Eagles sent McNabb to Washington and are sticking to their 'staying young' personnel philosophy.  The real problem is that the Eagles O-line is already banged up.  Center Jamall Jackson, LG Todd Herremans, and RG Nick Cole are all nursing injuries which will lead to a very long day for Kevin Klob.

Action: Money Line -150

Chargers

Even without Vincent Jackson and Marcus McNeill, Phillip Rivers and the Chargers have enough weapons to give the Chiefs fits.  On offense the Chiefs may be able to keep the game close but their D will have no answer for the high powered Chargers offense.

Action: Money Line -220

Colts

The Colts are still the team to beat in the AFC.  The Texans say this will be their year and point to what could be a weak O-line for the Colts.

I expect Jeff Saturday to play and that will be enough for the Colts to walk away with the victory.

Action: -2.5

Browns

This is the upset special of the week.  The Brows finished last season on a four game win streak.  Since then they got rid of Quinn and Anderson and added Delhome at QB.  Now we all know how terrible Delhomme was last year, but he doesn't need to be good to beat Josh Williams.  Jerome Harrison is the real deal at running back and should provide enough pop to open up the game in Cleveland's favor.

Action: Money Line +130

Sweet Action: Who Dat?

Kevin, the host of the D.C. Sports Guys, will start the NFL season with $100 of his own money. The objective is simple: make as much money as possible betting on NFL games. No funds can be added during the season and if the account ever hits $0 Kevin will have to pack it in and admit defeat.

The NFL season kicks off tonight with the Vikings traveling to New Orleans in a rematch of the NFC Championship game.  Last year the Vikings shot themselves in the foot turning the ball over on five occasions, the last by Brett Favre with seven seconds left in regulation.  The Saints got the ball to start overtime and the rest is history.

This year the Vikings head south without the services of Sidney Rice and Cedric Griffin.  There are also plenty of questions surrounding Brett Favre's ankle and his late arrival to camp.  Floundering around in the off-season and skipping most of pre-season has become business as usual for Favre, but this year there are no "warm-up" games.  Last year Favre had the benefit of starting the season against Cleveland and Detroit in weeks one and two.  The Saints, a team that appears to be as unified as ever after winning the Super Bowl last year, will be anything but a warm-up in week one.

The Vikings are in for a rude awakening tonight when they face a team that I believe will not be affected by a post-Super Bowl hangover.  Drew Brees and the Saints will roll past the Vikings and cover the 6 point spread.

Since most of the action in week one will not start until Sunday I only have two smaller wagers on the line tonight.  One I've teased with teams I believe will win on Sunday and the second is a single bet on the Saints with the points.
