You Can't Polish a Turd - Redskins Review

Since I can’t be there to voice my complete disgust over the Redskins’ performance on the DC Sports Guys tonight, here are my thoughts on what I would like to say during the segment. I’m not sure how this will turn out due to the pure hatred and disgust I am currently feeling over the state of this organization. And I try my best not to speak in hyperbole, especially when it comes to sports, but I can’t hold back anymore, the Lions game was absolutely the worst performance I have ever seen from them. Much worse than the 36-0 Mara tribute at the Meadowlands – the Giants played with sweet emotion, and they were a better team. And much worse than anything from the Shuler / Frerotte / George / Banks / Matthews / Wuerfel era – at least with these guys we didn’t set expectations (seriously, anything positive was gravy). And I’m not even talking about Super Bowl expectations. But we were supposed to be improved and at least able to compete this season. We weren't supposed to lose to the 0-19 Detroit Lions with a Rookie QB and team full of castoffs. Their performance was pathetic and inexcusable, and to make things worse, the Lions were the better team!!

So much has been said about what needs to be done to fix the situation. Knowing they weren’t Super Bowl bound this year, I didn't want to overreact if there were signs of early struggles, especially scoring points (touchdowns). But it’s painfully obvious that this team’s current trajectory has them headed in the wrong direction. So what really needs to be done? Well I think a coaching change is obvious, Zorn couldn’t get it done with this roster which isn’t completely void of talent. But its not on him totally, the entire staff probably needs to be replaced, and he didn’t hire most of them. The prevailing opinion though is that no change will be made during the season because Zorn wears so many hats on the coaching staff, that losing those functions now would make them a lock for the #1 overall draft pick next year. But really is drafting a potential franchise QB such a bad prospect? Unfortunately if Snyder is drafting, the answer is YES.

Which brings us to the real problem with the team, which is way deeper than coaching – this team is poorly built. Once again, we are stuck with lots of pieces that don’t fit together. The offensive and defensive lines are a mess, and most of the skill players are overpaid veterans who are past their primes. I can count on one hand the number of productive veteran players so far this year: (1) London Fletcher and (2) Chris Cooley, with an honorable mention to Santana Moss for the Lions game. I really think this team needs to be built from the ground up (not re-built, because they weren’t built properly to begin with). So for the rest of the year, I would love to see more youth on the field – guys like Mitchell, Mason, Jarmon, Barnes and Tryon getting a chance to play; and for the love of God move Orakpo to his natural position! I would rather watch no sacks Carter play OLB than watch Sackpo’s talents wasted with bad coaching. They need to find out if there is young talent to build around, starting now. The veterans who are entrenched on the roster should be benched for their lack of production, anyway. Unfortunately, this plan would also involve trading some veteran talent for draft picks, and there are precious few veteran players that have any value (and more importantly moveable contracts) which are maybe limited to Cooley, Landry and Betts. Players like Portis, Randle El, Carter, Haynesworth, Hall and Smoot should be cut so they can start over with a "fair" market value contract from a real team, or just go away. And they might as well put new QB on the shopping list. Of course, all of this is only possible if they hire a GM first. Unfortunately though, next year will be business as usual at Redskins Park, they will cut a few more overpaid veterans, restructure other overpaid veterans’ contracts, and sign new overpaid veterans to record contracts. At least they are preserving (a crappy) tradition.

Sweet Action: NFL Week 3

Kevin, the host of the D.C. Sports Guys, will start the NFL season with $100 of his own money. The objective is simple: make as much as possible betting on NFL games. No funds can be added during the season. He will either lose it all or be smoking a victory cigar on February 7, 2010.

Week #2 did not go well.  Tennessee's defense broke down and Seattle without Hasselbeck just can't get the job done.   The metrics don't lie, all that remains in the betting account is $48.33.  The Sweet Action segment has taken a turn for the worse.  This week I hope to get back in the green with 4 bets that risk $35 to win $193.58.

I was told the post last week was a bit too long.  Instead of going over every game, I'm only going to comment on the teams I've picked to win or cover this week.

N.Y. Giants
Even with the injuries to Dixon, Canty and Ross the Giants are still a very good football team.  Substitutes like Manningham have stepped in to keep the Giants in the win column.  It pains me to say it but the Giants might have the best all around team in the NFL.  Expect the G-men to be 3-0 going into week 4.

Action: Take the Giants on the money line

Chicago Bears

The Bears go into Seattle this week.  Seattle is not an easy place to get a win, but it becomes easier when Matt Hasselbeck is injured.  If Hasselbeck does play, Chicago's defense needs to hit him early and often.  Without their #1 QB at the helm Seattle won't be able to keep up with the Bears.

Action:  Chicago -3
New York Jets

The Jets find themselves three point favorites going into week 3 against the Titans.  The Jets proved who they were last week against the Patriots. Tennessee on the other hand fell to 0-2 losing to a Texans team the Jets blew out in week 1.  The Jets defense matches up well against Tennessee and their offense is good enough to score a few touchdowns.

Action: Jets -3
Green Bay Packers

Green Bay gets the perfect bounce back game facing St. Louis this week.  Even with this game in St. Louis don't expect any upsets.  Aaron Rodgers should have a big game against a week Rams defense.

Action: Packers on the money line.
Atlanta Falcons

The Falcons are 5 point dogs going into New England on Sunday.  The Patriots could easily be 0-2.  If you want to call this an "upset special" go ahead, but Atlanta is clicking on all cylinders while the the churn in players and coaching staff is finally starting to show itself in New England.

Action: Atlanta +5
New Orleans Saints

The Saints face a tough opponent in week 3 against the Bills.  And by tough, I mean that Drew Brees should only throw for about 300 years and 3 touchdowns.

Action: Saints on the money line
San Diego Charges

The Chargers get the Dolphins at home this week.  The Dolphins have not shown they can stop a good offense to win a game.  They meet a great offense when they face San Diego.  While Miami can keep this game interesting don't expect them to win.

Action: San Diego on the money line.
Cincinnati Bengals

Who are the Bengals?  Week 1 was a surprise, only putting up 7 points against Denver.  In week 2 however, Cincinnati broke out of it's shell.  The Bengals at home with Carson Palmer starting are good enough to put up 21 points against Pittsburgh.  Cincinnati's defense is also good enough to keep the Steelers offense in check.

Action: Cincinnati +4 and on the money line
Houston Texans

The Texans are another team the finally put their offense together in week 2.  As long as Schaub is healthy the Texans can put up points.  Facing the Jaguars this week Houston should get their defense to start playing better too.

Action: Houston on the money line

DAMN CINCINNATI! One tipped ball into the hands of Brandon Stokley and I go from ending week 1 up $34 to losing $5. Not the worst thing that could have happened, but really how lucky was that play? My safety net bets, #1 and #2, saved me last week and have kept me alive to bet another week.

Both Kansas City and Oakland performed well in week 1 against teams picked to go far in the playoffs. The Chiefs stayed close in a shootout against Baltimore while Oakland's defensive was solid against San Diego. This game could go either way which is indicative of the default three point spread. Kansas City also hasn't announced their starting QB yet listing Matt Cassel as a game time decision.
Tennessee is coming off a tough overtime loss to Pittsburgh in a game that showed their defense hasn't lost a step with the loss of Albert Haynesworth. The Texans on the other hand couldn't get any thing to go right in their opener against the Jets. The Jet's rookie quarterback, Mark Sanchez, threw for 272 yards and a TD and looked comfortable picking apart the Texans secondary. The Titans are an all around better team than Jets, are at home, and are hungry for their first victory. The Texans and their injury prone QB, Matt Schaub won't stand a chance.

The Jets played a perfect game down in Houston to open up their season. New coach Rex Ryan has this team finally playing up to their potential. Mark Sanchez will have a tougher time against the Patriots secondary but he has a capable backfield in Thomas Jones and Leon Washington. The Jets defense is no slouch either, expect the two pro-bowlers Revis vs. Moss match-up to be exciting and force Brady to work the ball to Joey Galloway and Wes Welker more than he did against Buffalo. The Patriots are coming off an opening game they should have lost. If McKelvin takes a knee Buffalo is 1-0. The Patriots are losing more and more players from their 3 championships and are a full year removed from their 16-0 season. Teams are starting to figure out blitz packages that work against New England and no one is scared of them this year. I expect a close game and even think the Jets have a good chance of winning out right, but I'll play this safe and use the Jets in a teaser to get a +10 or +13 point spread.
If not for a fluke play in the final minute of the game Cincinnati would be 1-0 coming into Green Bay. Rey Maualuga appears to be the real deal after just one week of play and was a bright spot on the Bengals defense in their opening loss to Denver. Cincinnati's defense will once again keep them in the game this week against Green Bay. Aaron Rodgers and Green Bay are the better team, but I don't see them pulling away by more than 9 points against another hard hitting defense in week 2. This game also fits into a good teaser situation getting the Bengals anywhere from +15½ to +18½.

When you come off an 0-16 season the last thing you need is to open your first game against one of the best offensive teams in the league and your second against one of the best defensive teams in the league. Detroit falls 0-2.
With Kevin Kolb slated to start at QB and missing two-time Pro Bowl offensive lineman Shawn Andrews the Eagles are going to have a tough time moving the ball on Sunday. Not even the Eagles defense, who play great in Carolina, will be able to keep them close enough to win. Drew Brees and the Saints get a gift from the NFL by not having to play at Philadelphia in the months of November or December. Instead they will arrive to sunny 75 degree conditions, perfect for the Saints to throw the ball all over the field.

This game will prove if Jake Delhomme still has what it take to be a QB in the NFL. His past two games have been terrible, but Delhomme has proven to be a good QB in the past and if he can get off the schnide Carolina has a chance to be competitive in this game. I'm mark it as 'Stay Away' only because I don't know which Carolina offense will appear this week. If they play anything like last week however, the Falcons will win by double the spread.

With that said... they can't lose to the Rams... right? If I were to bet with this game I'd use the money line to sweeten the deal on a 2-4 team parlay.

Jacksonville is coming off a good defensive showing against the Colts. But that defense only went 2-6 at home in 2008. The Cardinals looked sluggish in their opener against the 49ers, but everyone knows what that offensive is capable of. If the Jaguars play like they did in week one this game will be close, too close. With big question mark surrounding Jacksonville's offense and a hurt Anquan Boldin I'll keep my money away from this contest.
Seattle is healthy and back as being the team to beat in the NFC West. The 49ers are a tough team and much improved under Mike Singletary but they couldn't get a ground game started against Arizona. Their 21 yards on 25 carries leads me to believe Arizona lost that game more than the 49ers won it. That won't happen against Seattle.

Are the Bills for real? Is Cadillac back? Lots of questions will be answered this game. None of which I'd like to have money on when they happen.
Denver failed to score an offensive touchdown in week 1 and should not have had any touchdowns if not for the "immaculate deflection." Cleveland hung with Minnesota until the second half when Adrian Peterson ran all over them. I like Denver to win at home, but not enough to lay any money down.

The line makers are just begging people to take San Diego, +110!?!?! The Ravens showed their offense can move the ball last week and even though the game was close their defense still only allowed 188 yards against the Chiefs. I expect Baltimore to shut down the running game again this week and force Phillip Rivers to win the game. San Diego avoided a huge let down in week 1 by beating Oakland with 18 seconds left on the game clock. Giving up 20 points to JaMarcus Russell and the Raiders offense is inexcusable if you consider yourself a Superbowl contender. I'm not going to bite on Vegas ploy, Ravens +3.
Brian Urlacher is out for the year. Jay Cutler struggled against a good but not great Green Bay defense. Even without Troy Polamalu Pittsburgh's defense is one of the tops in the league. After a week against the Titans, Pittsburgh will find a lot more space to work against Chicago on offense and shut down Chicago on defense.

Anything can happen in this NFC East match-up. Unlike the Redskins the Cowboys will try to take advantage of the Giants secondary. This could end in a shootout.
The Colts didn't look good in week 1 and now Peyton will be missing Gonzalez's for up to 8 weeks. Until some of the young receivers on Indianapolis show they can step up I'll be keeping my money away from games involving the Colts.

Sweet Action: Kevin's NFL 2009/2010 Metrics

Kevin, the host of the D.C. Sports Guys, will start the NFL season with $100 of his own money. The objective is simple: make as much as possible betting on NFL games. No funds can be added during the season. He will either lose it all or be smoking a victory cigar on February 7, 2010.

The following post will be updated each week reflecting Kevin's current cash holdings and his week to week betting success or failure.

Arenas Accuses Wizards of Casting Magic Spells

Gilbert Arenas has not heard the phrase “never bite the hand that feeds you,” because I think he left his teeth marks in Abe Pollin’s check signing hand. Apparently Gilbert is blaming the Wizards for his injuries over the past few years since the team basically let him decide on his own when he was ready to play again, and he decided, on his own, to come back before he was completely healthy. How exactly is this the Wizards’ fault? Well as Gilbert said “sometimes you have to protect players from themselves. I don't feel like I got that type of protection [from the Wizards].” He makes it worse by accusing the Wizards of letting him come back before he was ready so they could use him to sell tickets. I doubt the Wizards wanted him to risk further injury so they would have to pay him $19M per year to not play. The problem is that he makes it seem like the Wizards deceived him into playing, despite knowing that he wasn't healthy. If anything they cast the magic spell of ‘take responsibility for your own actions’ on him, and he should be thankful that they respect him enough to allow him to make his own decisions. Of course if they didn't let him play when he wanted, what would he have accused them of doing? Seriously, Gilbert needs to understand the difference between misjudgement and deceit. And ironically he makes these statements after spending this past summer working with a personal trainer in Chicago. I guess he knows better now and doesn’t need to be protected from himself anymore.

Everyone knows that Gilbert is a (self-proclaimed) team player, which he proved last year when he signed his massive contract extension. He did the Wizard’s a solid by leaving enough money on the table so they could re-sign other key players (which was just enough money to sign a veteran player to a league minimum contract. Thanks for the help, Gil!). Gilbert is supposed to be the “franchise” player. He’s supposed to set the tone for the rest of the team. He’s supposed to show everyone that this system works. And he’s supposed to lead them to victory. He’s not supposed to publicly question their judgment and throw the entire organization under the proverbial bus. That won’t solve anything, and it definitely won’t help them win more games. Not taking responsibility for his decision makes him look immature, narcissistic and foolish, and more importantly, it makes the Wizards look more foolish for having him as a franchise player.

The D.C. Sports Guys 9-15-2009

Football dominates the show yet again this week as Kevin, TJ, and the Wolfman start the show talking about the Redskins opening game, analyzing the good the bad and the very ugly. Eventually they move on to talk about the rest of the NFL, some college football, the Caps, tennis, and more.

Sweet Action: NFL Week 1 - UPDATED

Kevin, the host of the D.C. Sports Guys, will start the NFL season with $100 of his own money. The objective is simple: make as much as possible betting on NFL games. Kevin will not be allowed to add any funds during the season leaving the outcomes to be either a joyous celebration in February or a bitter somber defeat when all $100 are lost any time before then.

I was hoping to have a full block of bets by the time of this posting, but the place I wager with has not posted money lines for any games outside of the Steelers vs. Titans game.  I normally don't wager on the point spread alone, but I feel Pittsburgh has a great chance to beat the Titans at home.  With that in mind I decided to put together a couple 4 team 'Sweetheart Teasers'.  A 'Sweetheart Teaser' is like a normal teaser but the point spread for each game is moved 13 points in your favor.  The payout is only 83% of the risk, but it's week 1 and I'm trying to get some wins under my belt in order to make this $100 last an entire NFL season.  As soon as the money lines are posted for the rest of the Sunday and Monday games I will update this post with those wagers.

UPDATED 9/12:
Money lines for the remaining games of week 1 were finally posted Friday night, allowing me to add three more bets to my portfolio. The five bets listed below risk a total of $60 in hopes of generating $181.99 in winnings. Bets #1, #2, and #4 are what I consider my safety nets while bets #3 and #5 are where I’m looking to win big. Throughout the bets you’ll notice a core grouping of picks that I’ve chosen to be the backbone of my betting strategy.

Bets #1 and #2 were built around Pittsburgh. I knew they would have a tough game against the Titans but being able to move the spread to +6.5 for the Steelers at home is almost a no brainer. The game was close, but I was never worried that the Titans would be able to pull out to, or keep, a 7 point lead. Once the game went to overtime, I had a smile on my face.

The rest of Bet #1 includes the Vikings, who should beat the Browns straight up, at +8.5, the Jets, who have never lost to the Texans, at +18 and the Redskins, who I rarely bet on, at +19.5. I make an exception for the Skins here because even if they play terrible (like they did in the opener last year when they lost by 9), they have a good enough defense to keep the game within a touchdown or two.

Bet #2 includes the heavily favored Ravens, Saints, and Seahawks and moves the point spreads to more reasonable numbers. All three of these teams should be able to handle their opponent easily but why count on a blow out when you have the option lower the risk.

The last three bets all include Cincinnati and Seattle. Carson Palmer is healthy and is no less than one thousand times better than Kyle Orton. Palmer will carve up Denver’s defense and will be the difference in the game. Seattle has gone though a coaching change, but has also got a healthy team again after suffering the loss of Hasselbeck, their entire starting offensive line and seven wide receivers in 2008. How they still won 4 games last year is a mystery. Wait… maybe it’s not… 2 of the 4 wins came from… you guessed it, the St. Louis Rams, who they open up against in Week 1.

Bet #3 looks to shoot the moon in a 7 team parlay. Basically this is my “would be nice if it happened” bet. The Dolphins are better than advertised and could give the Falcons fits in the Georgia Dome. The Jags split with the Colts last year where both games were decided by 7 points or less. San Diego gets to play the lowly Raiders and we’ve already talked about the Jets and the Vikings.

Bets #4 and #5 both include teams we’ve already talked about, just wagered on in different forms to cover a straight up or money line bet with a point spread or vice versa. None of these bets counter another bet. They only enhance the action in my favor.

LETS GET READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL!

Kevin, T.J., and Big J. sit down to talk about football, some more football, and then even a little bit more football. With baseball winding down, and basketball and hockey yet to start is there really anything else to talk about? The guys eventually do talk about the start to NHL camps, the U.S. Open and T.J. even slips in a mention of soccer, but let be honest, between college and the NFL seasons ramping up there is really only one sport to talk about right now.

Shut Up O's Fans

I've had just about enough of stupid Orioles fans. I can't read one more rant from some idiot commenter on an Orioles Blog (School of Roch, the Schmuck Stops Here) about how this team will never compete and how they are, as one commenter put it, "falling deeper and deeper into the abyss." WHAT? Have you been paying attention to anything that has gone on in the past two years?

I'd like to think this is just fans overreacting to another bad loss to the Yankees. But really, this sentiment has been building throughout the season, and this series has just brought it to a head. Yes, the Yankees swept the Orioles. But what did you think would happen? Any sane person, with his expectations in line, would not be able to get this upset. Instead, its fire Trembley, fire McPhail, Matt Weiters is a bust, Brian Roberts has mailed it in, the young pitchers will never develop, trade Adam Jones.... Hold on people! This year was never about winning. As much as you want it to be, it's not.

Now I know this upsets many of you. You expect the Orioles to win the World Series every year. You blame Andy McPhail for not doing enough in the off season. Short of signing every available free agent, this team was not going to the playoffs. "But hold on!," you say. "Why can't we sign every free agent out there!?" Because, dumbass! It's not economically feasible. Nor is it even possible. Not every free agent wants to play here. If even if Peter Angelos drops the astronomical sums of money on old, washed up, and injury prone players (Ben Sheets anyone?) that you want him to, the Yankees and Red Sox will just out spend him. The only way to compete in the AL East is through the process that Andy McPhail has begun.

That means passing on crap free agents and reinvesting that money in scouting, player development, and draft picks. It means dropping $1M on a 27th round high school pitcher to keep him from going to college. It means expanding international scouting (signing Japanese pitchers, new academy in the Dominican Republic). It means locking up young players to long term, affordable contracts. It means dumping dead weight that won't help the team in the future and turning it around for young players. So goodbye Erik Bedard, Miguel Tejeda, Ramon Hernandez, and Aubrey Huff. And no, idiots, not every player obtained in these trades is going to turn out to be a star. And to think so is ludicrous. But yet, some of you think that! I know you do.

So while you're out there screaming your head off about another loss to the Yankees, I'll be enjoying a strong outing by Jason Berken, another HR from Nolan Reimold, and more hot hitting from Felix Pie. And when the Orioles finally turn it around, and they will, I'll enjoy it even more because I didn't make myself miserable getting angry about things that were never going to happen.

Now all that being said, God, I hate the f@#%ing Yankees.

The D.C. Sports Guys 9-1-2009

Kevin, T.J., and the Wolfman have a lot to talk about during the longest D.C. Sports Guys show ever. The NFL dominates the opening of the show as the regular season is almost upon us. The guys also look back at UFC 102, talk some hockey, basketball and college sports.
