Sweet Action: NFL Week 1 - UPDATED

Kevin, the host of the D.C. Sports Guys, will start the NFL season with $100 of his own money. The objective is simple: make as much as possible betting on NFL games. Kevin will not be allowed to add any funds during the season leaving the outcomes to be either a joyous celebration in February or a bitter somber defeat when all $100 are lost any time before then.

I was hoping to have a full block of bets by the time of this posting, but the place I wager with has not posted money lines for any games outside of the Steelers vs. Titans game.  I normally don't wager on the point spread alone, but I feel Pittsburgh has a great chance to beat the Titans at home.  With that in mind I decided to put together a couple 4 team 'Sweetheart Teasers'.  A 'Sweetheart Teaser' is like a normal teaser but the point spread for each game is moved 13 points in your favor.  The payout is only 83% of the risk, but it's week 1 and I'm trying to get some wins under my belt in order to make this $100 last an entire NFL season.  As soon as the money lines are posted for the rest of the Sunday and Monday games I will update this post with those wagers.

UPDATED 9/12:
Money lines for the remaining games of week 1 were finally posted Friday night, allowing me to add three more bets to my portfolio. The five bets listed below risk a total of $60 in hopes of generating $181.99 in winnings. Bets #1, #2, and #4 are what I consider my safety nets while bets #3 and #5 are where I’m looking to win big. Throughout the bets you’ll notice a core grouping of picks that I’ve chosen to be the backbone of my betting strategy.

Bets #1 and #2 were built around Pittsburgh. I knew they would have a tough game against the Titans but being able to move the spread to +6.5 for the Steelers at home is almost a no brainer. The game was close, but I was never worried that the Titans would be able to pull out to, or keep, a 7 point lead. Once the game went to overtime, I had a smile on my face.

The rest of Bet #1 includes the Vikings, who should beat the Browns straight up, at +8.5, the Jets, who have never lost to the Texans, at +18 and the Redskins, who I rarely bet on, at +19.5. I make an exception for the Skins here because even if they play terrible (like they did in the opener last year when they lost by 9), they have a good enough defense to keep the game within a touchdown or two.

Bet #2 includes the heavily favored Ravens, Saints, and Seahawks and moves the point spreads to more reasonable numbers. All three of these teams should be able to handle their opponent easily but why count on a blow out when you have the option lower the risk.

The last three bets all include Cincinnati and Seattle. Carson Palmer is healthy and is no less than one thousand times better than Kyle Orton. Palmer will carve up Denver’s defense and will be the difference in the game. Seattle has gone though a coaching change, but has also got a healthy team again after suffering the loss of Hasselbeck, their entire starting offensive line and seven wide receivers in 2008. How they still won 4 games last year is a mystery. Wait… maybe it’s not… 2 of the 4 wins came from… you guessed it, the St. Louis Rams, who they open up against in Week 1.

Bet #3 looks to shoot the moon in a 7 team parlay. Basically this is my “would be nice if it happened” bet. The Dolphins are better than advertised and could give the Falcons fits in the Georgia Dome. The Jags split with the Colts last year where both games were decided by 7 points or less. San Diego gets to play the lowly Raiders and we’ve already talked about the Jets and the Vikings.

Bets #4 and #5 both include teams we’ve already talked about, just wagered on in different forms to cover a straight up or money line bet with a point spread or vice versa. None of these bets counter another bet. They only enhance the action in my favor.
